Live Betting
Live or in-play betting means placing a wager while the sporting event is already taking place. Because new information arrives continuously, live odds, market availability and cash-out values can change within seconds.
Why live odds move so quickly
The UK Gambling Commission explains that in-play prices are amended continuously as operators receive new event information and manage liabilities. Real-time sports data can be used to revise prices, suspend markets and settle bets.
Broadcast delay creates a real information gap
UK regulatory standards therefore require operators to make customers aware that “live” broadcasts can be delayed and that others may have more up-to-date information.
Why a live market may suddenly suspend
Material event
A goal, penalty, red card, point or other event can temporarily make existing odds stale.
Data update
Operators may suspend while confirming the event state and recalculating prices.
Settlement control
Suspension can also protect against accepting bets after the outcome of a short-lived market is effectively known.
Cash out is not a fixed entitlement
The regulator notes that in-play cash-out offers can be volatile. As the chance of winning changes, an offer may increase, decrease or be removed. Where cash out is offered, terms should explain availability, acceptance and settlement.
In-play lifecycle
| Stage | What can happen |
|---|---|
| Market open | Price is available based on the current event state. |
| Bet submitted | A processing delay may apply before confirmation. |
| Event changes | Price may move or the market may suspend. |
| Cash-out request | Offer may change or disappear before processing completes. |
| Settlement | Outcome is determined using the operator's published rules and data source. |
